Sheriff  George M. Sweezey 1895-1897

 

Sheriff Sweezey was a Civil War Veteran and ran the Atlantic Hotel on Main Street in the Hamlet of Marion, the apartment house across from the present Town Hall.

Sheriff Sweezey is Buried in the Marion Town Cemetary

Thomas Geer was a battle hardened veteran of the Civil War who later was appointed by the President to be the Postmaster in Marion.  Other deputies are listed as Jerry Collins, Chief Deputy - Harlow Merrill - George Jeffers - Charles Copping - and George Mitchell

Thomas Geer

 

Thomas Geer wrote a series of letters home during his ordeal in the Civil War with the 111 th New York.  This is the same unit in which the two son of Adrastus Snedaker served and died.  Information about the experiences of Thomas Geer can be found at the Museum of Wayne County History.  A series of books written by R.L.Murray about the 111 th NY can also be purchased there, among them, "The Redemption of the Harpers Ferry Cowards."
